A head-on collision killed one person and injured three others in Utah County Wednesday morning. About 10:30 a.m., the driver of a northbound Nissan Sentra tried to pass a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer near Pelican Point, close to Utah Lake on State Road 68, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden.

But after the driver pulled into the southbound lane, he hit a red Pontiac head-on, Roden said. The Nissan's driver, 29-year-old Omar R. Avila, was killed. A female passenger, believed to be his mother, was seriously injured. She was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

A man and a woman in the Pontiac suffered minor injuries and were taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center by ambulance. The pickup truck was not involved.

Roden said troopers also found "a pretty good roll" of cash bound by a rubber band at the crash site. It appears to have come from the Nissan. At this time, investigators do not believe it is tied to illegal activity but plan to ask Avila's mother about it.
