West Valley man accused of beating son, 1, with shoe and laundry basket

West Valley City police arrested a 22-year-old man they say threw a laundry basket at his 1-year-old son, hit him with a shoe and left him alone on a basement floor.

Salt Lake County jail booking documents state the boy was in his father's care for about a week while other family members were out of town.

The boy's grandmother found him on the basement floor Friday with bruises, injuries to the back of his head, a broken leg and cuts in his mouth. She took him to a hospital and police were called.

The father told police detectives he threw a laundry basket at his son, which caused the head injury, booking documents state. He also admitted to hitting him with a shoe, documents state.

The man was booked Saturday into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of child abuse.
