Utah Highway patrol troopers made 12 drunken-driver arrests and stopped 516 vehicles at a checkpoint near West Wendover on Friday night.

"I think the word got out, 'Don't go home tonight if you've been drinking,'" said Sgt. Ted Tingey. "It worked out pretty good."

A total of 40 officers worked the checkpoint on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Utah-Nevada state line and cruised the roads looking for drunken drivers. Additional arrests were made on drug charges and one on a warrant.

The checkpoint's timing coincided with the "Deer Widows" weekend in West Wendover, for women left behind while their husbands started the general hunting season Saturday.

Another checkpoint was planned for 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday at 1300 South and Main Street in Heber City to target hunters returning from the Strawberry Reservoir area.
