After the Nebo District school board decided Wednesday to disallow President Barack Obama's forthcoming nationwide speech to students from all of its schools, John Talcott, who was a teacher in that district for 27 years, called the board to ask why.

He was told that parents were concerned and had called the district, but board officials could not tell him how many were for airing the speech and how many against.

In fact, he said, they couldn't tell him how many parents actually called. They told him they had no idea, even though the Provo Daily Herald reported last week that only about a dozen people had called the Nebo District about the speech.

That doesn't exactly sound like a mandate, but remember, the Nebo District is in southern Utah County -- Eagle Forum country, where only one call, from one particular person, would do the trick.

Ready, fire, aim » Chance Williams probably isn't the most popular guy in the Utah County city of Woodland Hills, because he has publicly questioned the integrity of some of the city officials and their hiring practices, and he ran in the Republican primary last year against incumbent state Rep.
