An August 28 preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a Bountiful Junior High math teacher accused of having sex with a teenage male student.

Valynne Bowers, 40, appeared in 2nd District Court on Monday before Judge Michael Allphin, who will hearing evidence at the preliminary hearing, which is like a mini-trial where the alleged victim and others will testify.

Bowers is charged with one count each of rape and forcible sodomy, both first-degree felonies punishable by up to life in prison. Bowers, the boy's former math teacher, had a sexual relationship with him from Jan. 2 until Feb. 27, when he was 14, according to charging documents.

Another Bountiful Junior High teacher, Linda Nef, 46, had a sexual relationship with the same boy from Jan. 1, 2008, through Feb. 14, 2008, when he was 13.

Nef, who pleaded guilty last month to one count of attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child, is scheduled for sentencing Tuesday by Judge Rodney Page. She faces a possible prison term of three years to life, but probation with jail time is also a possibility.

Nef, who teaches Utah social studies and was a cheerleading advisor, reported both herself and Bowers to police.
