A blaze at a South Salt Lake Rite Aid store may have been started by a firework being set off in the greeting card section, according to initial witness reports.

South Salt Lake Fire Chief Steve Foote said the Rite Aid, Hancock Fabrics and Checker Auto Parts were evacuated when smoke spread throughout the businesses, at 635 E. 3300 South.

Rite Aid suffered serious smoke damage and some water damage from the building's sprinklers.

When crews arrived, "there was heavy smoke and still some fire that was going in the area where the fire started," Foote said. "The sprinklers kept it in check."

Foote said investigators may have access to surveillance video to verify the fireworks report.
