State Rep. Carl Wimmer and his family escaped serious injury this weekend when a sports utility vehicle backed through a vendor tent at Herriman Days and hit Wimmer and his wife.
Wimmer said he and his family were going to the fireworks show at W&M Butterfield Park in Herriman on Saturday night at about 9:30 and was talking to Craig Tischner, a candidate for Herriman City Council, when Tischner's "eyes got real big and I turned to see this truck flying toward us."
Tischner said he saw the truck's reverse lights go on and the truck accelerating.
"I just did what I think everyone else would've done. I just started grabbing shirts and arms and throwing people out of the way behind me," he said.
The truck drove through a large vendor tent and struck Wimmer, a competitive weight lifter, and his wife, Sherry, as she tried to shield their two sons Heston, 4, and Reagan, 2. A bystander grabbed the couple's 7-year-old daughter, Jade, and pulled her out of the way.
Both Wimmer and his wife were knocked to the ground and ended up under the vehicle. The truck struck Sherry Wimmer's head, leaving her a bump. Wimmer injured his neck and shoulder and, although he declined to go to the hospital, is scheduled to have an MRI test on Tuesday and has numbness in his hand.
Salt Lake County sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson said officers were called and the case remains under review.
"The investigation continues to determine if any charges
Wimmer said the incident gave the family a scare, but he feels lucky everyone escaped with relatively minor injuries.
"It could've been so much worse," he said. "When I saw all three of my kids and none of them were hurt, it was just my wife and I were banged up pretty good, you count your blessings."
