A former Hurricane lawman accused of turning a missing child call into a sexual encounter with the girl's mother has pleaded no contest to a a charge of custodial sexual relations.

The Spectrum reports that 5th District Judge James Shumate announced Wednesday that he had met in chambers with Nathan Amosa's attorney, Gary W. Pendleton, and County Attorney Ryan J. Shaum , and approved a plea deal.

Shumate said Amosa would serve 60 days in the county jail as part of the agreement, though precisely how long he is behind bars will ultimately be determined by the Washington County Sheriff's Office based on good behavior and other factors.

A Hurricane woman alleged that the encounter took place in March 2008 when Amosa responded to a call that her 3-year-old daughter, later found, had disappeared from their home.

The Spectrum reports that the woman said Amosa at first tried to comfort her but then began to fondle her. The woman said they then moved to her bedroom. The woman claimed she was afraid not to comply because Amosa was armed, though Pendleton argued that "we didn't think there was any coercion."

Shaum said the woman in the case supported the way it was resolved.
