The Iron County Sheriff's Office continued its investigation Tuesday into the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl celebrating her birthday in Beryl.

Sheriff Mark Gower said investigators finished reconstructing the scene of the Monday shooting at the home of the girl's grandparents.

"It was definitely an accident," Gower said of the shooting, but did not say if the fatal shot was from the victim or the friend.

"We finished a reconstruction at the scene to get a snapshot of what happened," said Gower.

He said investigators also plan to interview others at the party.

He said the shooting of the girl in the upper torso happened when the victim and a female friend, also age 5, found a .22-caliber rifle under a bed in the house while the adults were outside.

The Arizona girl would have been 6 years old on Tuesday.

Gower said, at the request of the mother, he will not release the name of the girl.

"They [family] are in a state of shock," said Gower." We're not releasing the [victim's] name out of respect for the family's wishes."

He expected the investigation to be finished next week.
