An increase in bear sightings in parts of Ashley National Forest has forced the forest service to close the Avintaquin Campground in Duchesne County to some overnight visitors.
People camping in the area must sleep in "a structurally sound camping vehicle," the forest service said in a statement released Friday. Sleeping outside is prohibited beginning June 19. A date to reopen the campground to all visitors has not been set.
The closure affects the Avintaquin Campground along the Reservation Ridge Road, south of Duchesne.
In the statement, District Ranger John R. Kirkaldie said, "We are working to resolve this issue with the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources to ensure the campground is safe for those camping in the area."
