A two-alarm fire ripped through a Bluffdale home Thursday night, causing more than $1 million in damage.

A 9-year-old girl was the only person home at 1058 W. Pheasant Tail Drive when the fire began. Investigators were not sure how the blaze started.

Bluffdale Fire Chief John Roberts described the home -- which sits in a neighborhood of pricey, newer houses -- as a "total loss." He said the fire likely began about 9 p.m. near the home's back deck and a garden shed. There is no indication of arson, the chief said.

Dan Eerkess, who lives across the street from the destroyed house, watched a neighbor help rescue a 9-year-old girl inside. Then, Eerkess said, the neighbor tried using a household extinguisher to stop the flames. It didn't work.

"It was incredible," Eerkes said. "It took under five minutes for that whole house to be a total loss."

Nearby homes were not damaged, but Roberts said the houses were close enough that some window wells filled with water as firefighters battled the flames.

The displaced family is now staying with friends and neighbors, Roberts said.

Meanwhile, Unified Fire Authority investigators say a Cottonwood Heights fire that destroyed a vacant home at 2510 E. Chalet Road on June 5 was arson.

That blaze caused as much as $350,000 in damage.

"They do have a person of interest at this point, and they are continuing with that investigation to follow through," said UFA
