Centerville City Councilwoman Sherri Lindstrom was behind the wheel of a car that collided with and injured a 10-year-old boy skateboarding in a Bountiful crosswalk, she said Monday.

"The main thing I care about is the boy and his family and their well-being. ... We want him to be OK; we are praying for that," Lindstrom said. She has had no contact with the family. "That is their call," she said.

The boy remained in critical but stable condition at Primary Children's Medical Center on Monday after suffering "some major head injuries," said Bountiful police Lt. Randy Pickett.

Possible traffic citations against Lindstrom, 55, will be screened by Bountiful city prosecutors, Pickett said.

Though she declined to comment on the crash, saying it was under investigation, Lindstrom said she was not distracted by a dog she had in the car.

"This can happen to anyone, 10 minutes from now, three years from now," she said. "I am an extremely cautious and careful driver."

She collided with the boy about 7 p.m. Friday as he crossed a crosswalk on his skateboard near 325 West and 400 North, Pickett said. Eastbound traffic had already stopped for the boy.

The sun was in Lindstrom's eyes at the time, Pickett said. The impact flipped the child onto the top of her car and he hit his head on the windshield. He was not wearing a helmet.

As a city councilwoman, she said she may now request that crosswalks also include flashing safety lights. She was elected to the City Council in November 2005. Her term expires in January 2010. She manages rental properties for a living.
