Misdemeanor charges were filed against a Garfield County man Wednesday for allegedly threatening County Attorney Barry Huntington in a phone message.

The 41-year-old Escalante man called and left a message on Huntington's office phone on the night of April 26 and "there were expletives every other word and it was threatening as well," said Garfield County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becki Bronson.

She went on to explain that the man did not explicitly threaten to kill or hurt Huntington, "but there was talk of extreme violence," she said.

The man apparently made the threats after his wife contacted Escalante police officer Jared Dunton to try to get a stalking injunction against the man.

When the man found out, he called Dunton on Sunday night and left him a harassing message, Bronson said. "It was not as threatening [as Huntington's] but it was very offensive," she said.

The man then called Huntington's office and left the "fairly long," threatening rant, Bronson said.

It is unclear why the man call Huntington since his office "didn't have a whole lot of intervention in the stalking injunction," Bronson said.

Both officials heard the messages from the man Monday at work. After a review of the phone calls, charges were filed by Mark McIff of the Piute County Attorney's Office. The man is facing a class A misdemeanor charge of threats to influence official action and electronic communication harassment, a class C misdemeanor.

If the case goes to trial, Huntington is expected to be a witness, Bronson said.
