The two people killed in a Sevier County crash last week were from southwestern Guatemala, the Utah Highway Patrol said Monday.

UHP identified the men as Antonio Lopez Vicario, 17, of Santa Catarina in the Guatemalan state of Sololá, and Jeremias Tanbriz y Tanbriz, 34, of Mahuala, Sololá.

They were among 12 people riding in a Toyota van early Tuesday. The van was traveling east on Interstate 70 near Salina when the driver fell asleep, ran off the road and overcorrected, the UHP said. The van flipped and ejected four people, including Vicario and Tanbriz y Tanbriz.

The van was believed to be headed to Denver from California. Lori Haley, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the incident is being investigated as a possible human-smuggling operation. The van occupants were from Guatemala and Mexico, she said.
