There are oil spills and mine disasters all over the world. For weeks we have heard of the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and now Utah has its own oil spill in Red Butte Canyon.
With righteous indignation the residents along Red Butte Creek blame the pipeline's owner, Chevron. They demand to know who is going clean their stream and replace their fish. While the pipeline belongs to Chevron oil, it wouldn't be there if it weren't for our unquenchable thirst for fossil fuels.
When will we start sharing responsibility for these disasters? Everyone who drives a car, rides in a bus or a boat, flies in a plane, or heats and cools their home has to share in the responsibility for these events. The oil companies and the coal mines must do their best to protect life and the environment, but we must remember that they are just filling our energy demands.
