A news report indicates that Utah State is getting a new cornerback transfer from SEC country.

Daniel Gray, a 2012 Tennesee signee, will transfer to Utah State this fall, according to Eric Woodbury of Go Vols Xtra. Gray went to Boyd Anderson in Florida, the high school of Aggies receivers Travis Reynolds and JoJo Natson.

Last year, Gray saw action in eight games with only six total tackles and started once as a freshman. A coaching change at UT seemed to bolster a decision to leave the V...

The Mountain West has agreed to a multi-year deal with Direct TV to air approximately 10 football games and no fewer than 25 men's basketball games starting next season.

The conference announced the deal Wednesday afternoon, giving the conference an additional regional imprint to its national deals with CBS Sports Network and ESPN. Root Sports reaches an estimated 2.5 million households across nine states in the Rocky Mountain region. The Tribune's Scott Pierce predicted a regional deal was forthcoming.

What does it mean for Utah State? More games will be on TV. Fans can enjoy more contests, especially basketball, from the comfort of home ...

Utah State will have another game on the ESPN family of networks, but the time and channel have yet to be decided.

The Aggies' Nov. 9 contest at UNLV was one of 15 games picked up by ESPN, the Mountain West announced Thursday afternoon. Five of Utah State's games have been picked up by CBS Sports Network, and another at San Jose State will air on ESPN, aside from the recently announced contest.

This announcement lacks the punch of the previous ones. ESPN could air the game on ESPNU or online on ESPN3 if it chooses. If UNLV continues its recent struggles, the game is probably a candidate for going online....

Utah State will be competing in the Mountain West this fall, but a USA Today report shows that the school still has ground to make up when it comes to producing revenue against some of the conference's heavy hitters.

The athletic department has seen its revenue more than double in the last six years, but the Aggies' budget still trails all Mountain West schools. The USA Today database ranks Utah State at No. 108 in revenue against all other Division I schools, generating just over $21 million in 2012.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post incorrectly characterized one of Terrell Young's college opportunities. Young was offered a preferred walk-on spot at Southern Utah.

Judge Memorial coach Dan Del Porto wishes he had one more year with Terrell Young.

When Young joined the Bulldogs as a sophomore from Alpine, he was a little guy with some exceptional skills. As time has gone on, he's grown to 6-foot-3, and his shot has become one of the biggest threats on the floor.

One more year of grooming, Del Porto said, and he might've gotten a lot more college attention.

"He would've been on a lot ...

In the short spring hoops season so far, Malek Harwell has stepped up.

The 6-foot-4 rising junior from Idaho has been turning a lot more heads as the top scoring threat for Utah Pump N Run 16-U Red. He was a menace in last weekend's Double Pump Spring Classic in Las Vegas, showing the ability to shoot from all over the floor and get to the basket against other solid prospects.

That effort paid off early this week, as Harwell got his first college offer from Utah State. And it's probably not going to be the last one for the 15-year-old shooting guard.

"This year he's made such a jump," coach Jason Long. "A lot of people can't believe how much better he's gotten. He's n...

The NFL Draft is over. Many teams have already bolstered their summer rosters with undrafted free agents.

Time to talk about it.

Here's some Miami and Indianapolis reaction, respectively, to Will Davis and Kerwynn Williams being taken in the NFL Draft:

At least two more Utah State players have signed NFL free agent contacts.

The school announced Saturday night that defensive tackle Al Lapuaho had signed with the St. Louis Rams, and receiver Chuck Jacobs had signed with the San Francisco 49ers. With Will Davis and Kerwynn Williams being taken in the NFL Draft, and Matt Austin quickly signing a contract with the Seattle Seahawks, five Aggies from the program's 2012 season now know where they'll be headed this summer.

A native of West Valley City, Lapuaho came to Logan two years ago from Snow College. He put an exclamati...

Sure, it would've been nice to hear his name called in the NFL Draft.

But as it stands, Matt Austin isn't sweating the details. The 24-year-old wideout from Utah State knows he's in good hands after signing with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.

"I'm feeling good, I'm just relieved now," he told the Tribune shortly after the conclusion of the draft. "I've just been blessed with this opportunity to play in the NFL, and I've got to take advantage of it."

Austin lands with a competitive team, but also has a lot of friends already in Seattle. Former Aggies Robert Turbin and Bobby Wagner play there, as well as his junior c...

Can't make it to Romney Stadium this season? Don't sweat it. Just tune into CBS Sports Network for your Aggies fix.

Of course, the football team would probably like the stands packed for its games after the Mountain West Conference just announced a new 21-game package for this fall: Utah State has five games on CBS Sports Network, including four at home.

The Aggies will get a chance to boost their exposure with home games against BYU, Boise State, Hawai'i and Colorado State being aired on the network. Utah State will also get airplay when it visits Air Force in its conference opener on Sept. 7.

This past December, assistant athletic trainer Mike Williams saved basketball player Danny Berger's life with his steadiness and swiftness in an emergency.

Utah State has decided those are the kind of qualities it wants in its head athletic trainer.

On Thursday afternoon, the school via news release announced Williams will assume the role on May following the retirement of Dale Mildenberger, a 38-year employee at the university. It wraps up a high-profile year for Williams, who was widely recognized for his heroics after treating Berder with an automated external defibrillator on Dec. 4.

Hanging around Logan for most of the last month and a half, Matt Austin has been able to help the younger crop of Utah State receivers get better at spring practice.

But he's also been restless, looking for a chance to play himself.

"I'm ready for the wait to be over," he said. "I'm bored without football in my life. It's great to see my boys step up and play, but it makes me miss it that much more."

Austin, who led the Aggies in receptions and yards last year, isn't sure if he'll be taken in the NFL Draft, but he'll know a lot more about his future after this weekend. Whether he gets drafted, or whether he's looking for somewhere t...

When Tay Glover-Wright grabbed an interception in the Utah State spring game, his old roommate was cheering as loudly as anyone on the sidelines.

Will Davis, who crept up the depth chart this past season and became a legitimate NFL Draft prospect, felt a little strange not being on the field. But seeing the defense succeed gave him some closure on his Utah State career.

"It was good to see everybody doing well back there," he said. "Tay got a pick, Mo Alexander is back there hitting guys, all those guys are doing well. It was weird being one of the older guys, but also an honor to be like one of them who went to the NFL."

ESPN announced its initial seven televised games as part of its Mountain West Conference deal. And Utah State football learned it will have an early national primetime stage to show it's a true contender this season.

The Aggies' game at San Jose State on Sept. 27 has been plugged in for a 7 p.m. MT kickoff on ESPN - the flagship.

It won't be easy: It comes at the end of a brutal stretch of four of five games on the road and a short week after playing USC. San Jose State returns quarterback David Fales and 15 other starters who all surely remember being smothered in a 49-27 Aggies win last year.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Kerwynn Williams will try to keep everything normal. Stick to routine. Do the things he does every weekend.

Logan • Call it a last fix, if you want. Utah State football won't go dark, but the Aggies aren't going to be practicing with coaches for the next few months. And fans won't get much football.

But the Spring Game offered some food for thought between now and August. There will be more to digest over the summer, and all exhibitions should be taken with a grain of salt, but here are some things rattling around the noggin after watching Utah State play in the closest thing it'll have to a game until it goes to Rice-Eccles Stadium (it'll be here before you know it):

The Utah State football team takes the field tomorrow for its annual spring exhibition, an event expected to draw several thousand Aggie fans to Romney Stadium to see what the Matt Wells era might look like.

Does NFL Draft analyst Mike Mayock think Utah State is gaining a reputation as an NFL talent producer?

The NFL Network's top expert said he might not be the best person to ask.

"Ask Pete Carroll," Mayock said in his Thursday pre-draft conference call. "Pete Caroll had one of the best drafts last year, and Bobby Wagner and Robert Turbin were phenomenal."

Mayock says recent draft success stories have done a lot to boost Utah State's profile and brand.

Utah State basketball has a late addition to its incoming recruiting class: Viko Noma'aea, a 20-year-old point guard whom the Aggies hope can add some scoring and composure in the backcourt.

Noma'aea graduated from Sierra Vista High (Las Vegas, Nev.) in 2011, and has spent the last two years working for his parents and serving an LDS mission in Paris. He was only back a few weeks when he decided committing to Utah State would be the best choice for continuing his basketball career.

But if the Utah State football team is looking ahead, it wasn't reflected in their 13th spring session on Monday morning. The tempo was up and there wasn't much time for slacking. The Aggies are expecting a crowd of several thousand on Saturday, and they don't want to disappoint.

That meant more time on the field, longer drives - squeezing to the last drop.

The Utah State football team has only one more week to go this spring. Coach Matt Wells is getting a good feel for who could be a big part of his team this fall.

Some extra notes and quotes from Thursday's scrimmage:

• Some extra faces in the receiving game: Brandon Swindall is quietly becoming a reliable target. At 6-foot-4, he has the build of a go-get-the-ball receiver, and now his hands are starting to match. He got six catches for 87 yards today, including a key grab on the second team's two-minute drill touchdown drive. He's been better at contested balls, an area of great need for the receiving corp...

There was no mincing of words after Wednesday's practice: Defense won.

Aggies coach Matt Wells has been guarded about giving one unit the edge over another, but after watching the defense make plays and the offense unable to execute in morning practice, he was resolute.

"I thought the defense won from the very start," he said. "From period one to finish."

Although the offense regrouped to score on a two-minute drill at the end of practice, the other side of the ball set Wednesday's pace. Wells cited performances from the secondary as the defining factor that went into the solid effort: Brian Suite, Maurice Alexander and Tay Glover-Wright among them.

Logan • Especially in spring, practice can crystalize around a routine. From one drill to the next, the pattern can reinforce a factory-like staleness.

The Utah State coaching staff has an answer: break the routine.

When the Aggies, for example, take on an unexpected scheduling adjustment by playing full-team, full-contact drills in the middle of practice instead of building up to it for the end, it makes the environment a little more lively. Monday's change-up went well, coach Matt Wells said.

Logan - The touchdowns came more easily for Utah State's offense via long drives than on scripted opportunities that started closer to the goal line Thursday at Romney Stadium.

In the scrimmage portion of the Aggies' ninth of 15 sessions in spring practice, the offense dominated early before the defense re-established itself.

"We came out pretty strong and took it to the defense, but we kind of slowed down and didn't finish as well as we wanted to," said running back Joe Hill.

It felt more like a brawl as Maurice Alexander tore a ball from Brandon Swindall's hands, only moments after the big wideout had made a contested catch on the sidelines. Nevin Lawson made it clear who was winning, also on the first full team series, after intercepting Chuckie Keeton.

Logan • A few extra notes from Utah State's first football scrimmage on Thursday:

Offensive depth should be a concern • Matt Wells has mentioned it before, but that point was reinforced by how hard it was for the second- and third-string teams to move the ball. Jeff Manning struggled the most of any quarterback, going 1-for-10 with all three picks. But the issues are attributable to a number of factors: The offensive line isn't blocking as well further down the depth chart, and there were a number of outright drops by receivers.
