About a week out from the opening of Utah State's new multi-million dollar weight room, Dave Scholz is getting antsy.

The Aggies first-year strength and conditioning coach is doing fine at the moment with what he has. The football team is working hard as football season inches closer. But the new facility offers a new realm of possibility.

"It's exciting to think what that space is going to allow us to do, and the technology that will be there," Scholz said. "It's going to allow us to teach more effectively, and do a lot of things."

Scholz is back in the program after two years in the NFL, and he's already been spending the offseaso...

As promised, here's a little more information on the Utah Prospects crew that was offered by Utah State on Monday. None of them are close to deciding, but the Aggies are in the early mix for all four 2015 recruits.

Utah Prospects is planning to play in summer tournaments in Milwaukee and Las Vegas, but come winter, you'll be able to find a lot of these potential DI ball players at a high school near you.

Utah State football has been improving on the field for the last four seasons, but the Aggies aren't lagging off of classroom duties, either.

The NCAA released the 2011-12 figures for Academic Progress Rate - a measure of how institutions educate and graduate their athletes - and Utah State led in-state football programs and the Western Athletic Conference with a 967 average, thanks to a 988 score for the season.

As the Aggies move to the Mountain West, they still trail Boise State (993) and Air Force (974) in multi-year average. Signs point to continued improvement, as the Aggies h...

A group of rising juniors who play on the same AAU club had a lot to celebrate on Monday evening.

The Utah State men's basketball team got a jump on the 2015 class by offering four players from Utah Prospects, one of the hottest AAU programs in the state this spring. In all, point guard Jesse Wade, combo guard Brock Miller, wing Zac Seljaas and forward Makol Mawien now have Aggies offers to mull over.

"This is offer No. 1 for me," said Wade, a 6-foot-1 guard from Davis High. "It's pretty exciting. It's great that all the hard work and the countless hours are starting to pay off."

The group has been making waves early on this spring, winning a tournament in Las Vegas a...

"President Albrecht, tear down this old building!"

You might have said that if you were passing the old Harris Center the past few weeks, ready for construction on the $9.5 million Wayne Estes Center to begin.

Utah State took the first step toward building the new basketball and volleyball facility by getting rid of what's standing there now. On Monday, the demolition began, and the athletics department was all over it.

The Aggies anticipate the center opening in spring or early summer of 2014. The school has received some generous gifts for the project, including a ...

Any fan who has watched 10 minutes of a college basketball has probably thought officiating can be improved. Apparently so do the commissioners of the Pac-12 and the Mountain West.

On Friday, the two conferences announced a "collaboration" to manage their men's basketball officials, a deal they hope can help ease coordinating schedules and improve the quality of officiating.

One of the factors that helped form the partnership was that both conferences felt it was detrimental to have their officials work in different parts of the country. Between crammed schedules and airline flights, administrators in both the Pac-12 and the Mountain West were concerned about keep their offi...

Preseason recognition continues to roll in for Tyler Larsen. This fall, it seems much is expected out of the most seasoned returning Aggie.

The senior center was named to Phil Steele's fourth team All-America, yet another sign that he is seen as one of the top linemen in the country. Larsen was previously named first team all-Mountain West by Steele, and is on the Rimington Trophy watch list for the third straight year.

Larsen is the anchor of a unit returning five starters. He has started 38 consecutive games - the longest of any current...

The 2014 Mountain West men's and women's basketball tournaments will include all 11 teams with the top five conference finishers receiving byes.

The MWC's board of directors announced the decision following the annual meeting in Colorado Springs. The format for the tournament was among the agenda items facing the presidents this week as they get ready for a season with 12 football members and 11 all-sports members.

The tournament, running March 10 through 15 in the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, is scheduled to start with the first two rounds of the women's tournament, followed by the initial two rounds of the men's tournament. The semifinals of both tourneys will be F...

Utah State football's season opener with the Utes isn't just the start of college football for Utah - it will debut the sport on a new national network.

The Pac-12 announced Wednesday the Aug. 29 game will kick off at 6 p.m MT on Fox Sports 1, a new multi-national, 24-hour sports channel developed to compete with ESPN that will debut in August to an estimated 90 million homes.

When the Aggies visit Utah, it will be the first college football game on the channel. It marks one of the highest-exposure games of the season for the Aggies yet announced.

Jesse Parker has spent four years as one of the team managers for the Utah State men's basketball squad. His modesty about this role can be summed up by his Twitter handle: @USUwaterboy.

But Parker is also a deeply integrated member of the program, who has spent his four years with the team dedicating his time and effort to getting things done. He's become good friends with players, and roommates to some. He's literally helped save a life - that of Danny Berger - when someone needed to run for the AED.

After the position for director of basketball operations opened up, the Aggies had a guy in mind to promote: Parker.

The Aggies are two games closer to setting all of their times for their fall football schedule, announcing kickoff times for home games against Weber State and Wyoming on Tuesday afternoon.

Utah State will play its Homecoming and Hall of Fame Game on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. It will be Utah State's home opener, and the only home game the Aggies will play until Oct. 7 against BYU.

The Aggies will wrapup the regular season at home as well, taking on the Cowboys at noon on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Neither game has yet been officially picked up by the Mountain West's television partners.

Third time's the charm? Tyler Larsen can hope so.

The senior Aggie lineman has been named to the watchlist for the Rimington Trophy, the third time he's appeared on the list alongside the nation's top centers. Larsen, a first team all-WAC player the last two seasons, is one of Utah State's most important returners.

Although he missed spring practice, Larsen is expected to start at center once again this fall, anchoring a line that returns five starters and helped set several school records last year. Root Sports reaches an estimated 2.5 million households across nine states in the Rocky Mountain region. The Tribune's Scott Pierce predicted a regional deal was forthcoming.

Utah State will be competing in the Mountain West this fall, but a USA Today report shows that the school still has ground to make up when it comes to producing revenue against some of the conference's heavy hitters.

The athletic department has seen its revenue more than double in the last six years, but the Aggies' budget still trails all Mountain West schools. The USA Today database ranks Utah State at No. 108 in revenue against all other Division I schools, generating just over $21 million in 2012.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post incorrectly characterized one of Terrell Young's college opportunities. Young was offered a preferred walk-on spot at Southern Utah.

Judge Memorial coach Dan Del Porto wishes he had one more year with Terrell Young.

When Young joined the Bulldogs as a sophomore from Alpine, he was a little guy with some exceptional skills. As time has gone on, he's grown to 6-foot-3, and his shot has become one of the biggest threats on the floor.

In the short spring hoops season so far, Malek Harwell has stepped up.

The 6-foot-4 rising junior from Idaho has been turning a lot more heads as the top scoring threat for Utah Pump N Run 16-U Red. He was a menace in last weekend's Double Pump Spring Classic in Las Vegas, showing the ability to shoot from all over the floor and get to the basket against other solid prospects.

That effort paid off early this week, as Harwell got his first college offer from Utah State. And it's probably not going to be the last one for the 15-year-old shooting guard.

But as it stands, Matt Austin isn't sweating the details. The 24-year-old wideout from Utah State knows he's in good hands after signing with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.

"I'm feeling good, I'm just relieved now," he told the Tribune shortly after the conclusion of the draft. "I've just been blessed with this opportunity to play in the NFL, and I've got to take advantage of it."

The Aggies' game at San Jose State on Sept. 27 has been plugged in for a 7 p.m. MT kickoff on ESPN - the flagship.

It won't be easy: It comes at the end of a brutal stretch of four of five games on the road and a short week after playing USC. San Jose State returns quarterback David Fales and 15 other starters who all surely remember being smothered in a 49-27 Aggies win last year.

But the Spring Game offered some food for thought between now and August. There will be more to digest over the summer, and all exhibitions should be taken with a grain of salt, but here are some things rattling around the noggin after watching Utah State play in the closest thing it'll have to a game until it goes to Rice-Eccles Stadium (it'll be here before you know it):

The NFL Network's top expert said he might not be the best person to ask.

Noma'aea graduated from Sierra Vista High (Las Vegas, Nev.) in 2011, and has spent the last two years working for his parents and serving an LDS mission in Paris. He was only back a few weeks when he decided committing to Utah State would be the best choice for continuing his basketball career.

Some extra notes and quotes from Thursday's scrimmage:

• Some extra faces in the receiving game: Brandon Swindall is quietly becoming a reliable target. At 6-foot-4, he has the build of a go-get-the-ball receiver, and now his hands are starting to match. There was no mincing of words after Wednesday's practice: Defense won.

Aggies coach Matt Wells has been guarded about giving one unit the edge over another, but after watching the defense make plays and the offense unable to execute in morning practice, he was resolute.

"I thought the defense won from the very start," he said. "From period one to finish."

Although the offense regrouped to score on a two-minute drill at the end of practice, the other side of the ball set Wednesday's pace. The Utah State coaching staff has an answer: break the routine.

When the Aggies, for example, take on an unexpected scheduling adjustment by playing full-team, full-contact drills in the middle of practice instead of building up to it for the end, it makes the environment a little more lively. Monday's change-up went well, coach Matt Wells said.

Logan • A few extra notes from Utah State's first football scrimmage on Thursday:

Offensive depth should be a concern • Matt Wells has mentioned it before, but that point was reinforced by how hard it was for the second- and third-string teams to move the ball. Jeff Manning struggled the most of any quarterback, going 1-for-10 with all three picks. But the issues are attributable to a number of factors: The offensive line isn't blocking as well further down the depth chart, and there were a number of outright drops by receivers.
