The Xterra Winter World Championship is being held March 7-9 at Snowbasin Resort. The event includes mountain biking (on the snow), snowshoeing, running and ski mountaineering. There is $10,000 prize money and the event is being filmed for broadcast.

The event includes family friendly activities and nightly celebrations in Ogden.

The Winter World Championship starts with a mountain bike ride of two 5K laps on a hard-packed trail. Next is a 5K snowshoe run with a 500-foot climb. The next portion is a 5K run on groomed trails followed by a ski mountaineering event (randonnee) with participants climbing 1,300 feet and then turning downhill to ski a giant slalom course. Lava tubes tour

Snow Canyon State Park officials will lead a tour through the lava tubes at the park in Ivins on Saturday at 10 a.m. The two-mile round trip hike is limited and registration is required. Call 435-628-2255 to register.

Ralston speaks to Broads

Aron Ralston, author of Between a Rock and a Hard Place will speak and share a slideshow March 7 at the Eccles Center (1750 Kearns Blvd.) in Park City. The talk is being presented by the Park City Performing Arts Foundation as a fundraiser for Great Old Broads for Wilderness. Tracking rare plants

Leila Shultz, a professor at Utah State University, will lead a presentation Wednesday on "Tracking Utah's Rare Plants" at a meeting of the Utah Native Plant Society. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek.

Free REI clinics

Local mountaineer Carol Masheter will present a slideshow of her trip to Aconcagua in January 2007 at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek. At 22,840 feet, Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Americas. The show starts at 7 p.m.

USA Triathlon certified coach and Ironman triathlete David Pruetz will lead a clinic March 6 introducing participants to the triathlons. Pruetz will cover the history of triathlons, equipment, nutrition, training, categories and everything else you need to know while considering entering the sport. The clinic starts at 7 p.m. at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West.
