A collision with a moose in Parleys Canyon on Thursday evening sent a Summit County sheriff's deputy to the hospital.

Deputy Paul Scott was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 through the canyon when his police cruiser struck a moose lying in the roadway, said Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds. Scott's vehicle went airborne and rolled several times, he said. Emergency responders cut the roof off Scott's car to extract him from the vehicle. He was transported to University Hospital, Edmunds said.

The moose had previously been hit by another vehicle and couldn't be seen in the road because it was dark, he said.

Scott suffered injuries to his legs and the extent of other possible injuries wasn't immediately known, said Edmunds, who visited Scott at the hospital late Thursday. - Melinda Rogers
